Project Update
-
Further funding is now being sought to enable the Regeneration Programme to be completed during 2008. This year will see Area 4, being tackled. Here land levels vary about three feet in places, and graves have been moved leaving large holes. We envisage incorporating more natural conservation features, such as wildflower areas, hedgehog runs and more bird feeding stations, whilst maintaining the integrity of the graveyard

Future plans also include the building of a small Village memorial garden near the entranceway and resurfacing the front entrance drive

Bradford Family History Society are currently researching and archiving the burial records held at Heaton Baptist Chapel and the gravestone inscriptions. In conjunction with Bradford Libraries, they will produce a CD of these records, which we anticipate will be available to the general public. They are also arranging for the burial records to be rebound. This project is a long slow process, but details of records will be more easily accessible when complete

There is a memorial stone at Heaton Baptist Chapel to officially recognise those from the Heaton area who were killed or died as a result of injuries during the two World Wars. It was placed here originally due to the neglected state of the graveyard itself. During the regeneration work several of the war graves have been uncovered. Five of these are inscriptions on family graves, and the individual graves have been restored. Following a recent inspection by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission a report is in progress to recommend the graveyard itself as the official resting place. If approved, a small annual contribution will be received towards the upkeep of the graves

Information is currently being collated from people who have family connections with the graveyard and Heaton Village with a view to producing a local history book and a visitors leaflet. Please forward any stories, photographs, etc., which you feel may be of interest.
