A LOCAL HERITAGE INITIATIVE

'A Tree for Life'

For the cost of £20 a tree of your choice can be purchased in memory of a family member or friend. Or maybe a special family celebration has taken place and you wish to mark the occasion in this way.

The ornamental trees are of dwarf root stock, chosen specifically for small spaces, and as such, can be planted in amongst the graves to add interest and colour and to attract wildlife.

You can choose a ‘spot’ for your tree, and the cost includes a post and strappings and planting out. A plaque made from natural slate can be ordered to go alongside the tree for a small additional cost.

The scheme was introduced in 2006 and has been very successful. Forty trees have been planted to date on behalf of community members and their descendents. Species selected include cherry blossom, crab-apple, laburnum, lilac, copper beech and japanese maple.

Not only is it environmentally beneficial to encourage the planting of trees, but it helps us in our task and brings pleasure to others.

"I think that I shall never see

A poem as lovely as a tree

Peoms are made by fools like me

But only God can make a tree"

(Joyce Kilmer, Trees, 1914)
